Sunken antique ship near the Kinburn Spit

Archaeologists have established the time of the wreck of an ancient ship that sank near the Kinburn Spit

In the summer of last year, about 700 meters from the shore of the Kinburn Spit from the side of Tender Bay on a sandy bottom at a depth of 4-5 meters, the Black Sea International Archaeological Expedition discovered the remains of an antique sailing ship: a fragment of wooden sheathing, bronze and iron nails, as well as ballast (small stones, with which part of the hold was filled). In addition, pottery was discovered, the most beautiful of which is a vessel with a handle in the shape of a bull’s head.

There was no doubt that this was an ancient Greek ship, however, an in-depth analysis was required to accurately determine its age. Now, after the research carried out, the available material can be argued that this ship belongs to the end of the 4th – beginning of the 3rd centuries BC. Last year, after video and photo fixation, the remains of the ship were filled up to prevent their further destruction. It is planned to continue his research in the summer of 2019.

This is a very rare find. Prior to this, the remains of three ships of that era were found in the coastal waters of Ukraine at different times.
